Barcelona's financial turnaround: From billions in debt to a profit of €304m

By Josh Suttr | Jun 23, 2023 5:00pm CEST

FC Barcelona's Economic Vice President Eduard Romeo has revealed the club's huge debt figure but claimed that it has been able to significantly reduce the amount it owes.

Barcelona's debt has been an underlying factor in the club's business and football operations for the past few years.

In 2021, the club's debt was revealed to be €1.35 billion by the club's president, Joan Laporta. At the height of the club's financial woes former chief executive Ferran Reverter said in 2021 that the club would have "died" without a cash injection.

However, Romeo has now revealed that the club has been able to significantly reduce its debt, and is now in a much healthier financial position.

"We have reduced our debt by €304m this season," Romeo said. "This is a significant achievement, and it shows that we are on the right track."

Romeo also said that the club is now focused on building a sustainable financial model that will allow it to compete with the best clubs in Europe

"We are not going to spend money that we don't have," Romeo said. "We are going to be prudent, and we are going to make sure that we are financially sustainable."
