Dragonstone Unseen: Hiking San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

A Pilgrimage to the Basque Country

Before it was known as Dragonstone on Game of Thrones...

WEB Before it was known as Dragonstone on Game of Thrones, I got the chance to hike San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. This small island off the coast of Spain's Basque Country is a popular pilgrimage site, and its stunning scenery has made it a popular destination for hikers and tourists alike.

My journey began in the town of Bermeo, where I boarded a small boat that took me to the island. As we approached, I could see the island's iconic church, perched atop a steep cliff. The boatman dropped me off at the base of the cliff, and I began my ascent. The hike was challenging, but the views were worth it. As I climbed, I could see the Basque coastline stretching out before me. The air was fresh and salty, and the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs was invigorating.

After about an hour, I reached the top of the cliff. The church was even more impressive up close. It was built in the 10th century, and it has been a popular pilgrimage site ever since. I spent some time exploring the church, and then I took a break to enjoy the views. I could see for miles in every direction. It was a perfect day to be in the Basque Country.

After a while, I began my descent. The hike down was easier than the hike up, but it was still challenging. When I reached the bottom, I was tired but exhilarated. I had just experienced one of the most beautiful and challenging hikes of my life.

If you're looking for a challenging and rewarding hike, I highly recommend hiking San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The views are stunning, and the experience is unforgettable.
