49ers Release Final Roster
San Francisco 49ers Make Final Roster Cuts
San Francisco, California - (August 31, 2021)
The San Francisco 49ers have announced their final 27 roster cuts, bringing their roster down to the NFL-mandated 53 players. The 49ers made a number of tough decisions, including releasing several players who had been with the team for multiple seasons.
Among the most notable cuts were running back Jerick McKinnon, wide receiver Jalen Hurd, and defensive end Kentavius Street. McKinnon had been a key part of the 49ers' offense in recent years, but he was deemed expendable after the team signed running back Trey Sermon in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Hurd had been a highly touted prospect when he was drafted by the 49ers in 2019, but he has been plagued by injuries throughout his career. Street was a solid contributor on the defensive line, but he was released to make room for younger players.
The 49ers' final roster includes a number of talented players, but they will have to overcome some injuries to be successful in 2021. Quarterback Trey Lance is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season with a knee injury, and tight end George Kittle is also dealing with a knee injury. The 49ers will need their younger players to step up and contribute if they want to compete for a playoff spot in 2021.
